Sorry, Zack Snyder devotees: the writer of Man of Steel “really liked” James Gunn’s Superman, and there’s one character he’s especially fond of.
The DCEU is dead, and the SnyderVerse tapped out with the director’s cut of Justice League. Yet, throughout Superman’s theatrical run, a small, vocal collective of fans continually pit Gunn’s film against Snyder’s movies (even though their box office hauls are incompatible).
Here’s the thing: Snyder is friends with Gunn (they even teamed up for a Rick & Morty episode poking fun at themselves), and they’ve been supportive of each other.
David S. Goyer, the writer behind 2013’s Man of Steel, is also a big fan of the new film – despite the new Superman being very different from its predecessor.
Man of Steel writer loves Mr Terrific in Superman
Speaking to CinemaBlend for the release of The Sandman Season 2, Goyer was asked what he thought of Gunn’s Superman.
“I really liked it. People always assume that because I did The Dark Knight, I wouldn’t like The Batman, but I really enjoyed it,” he said.
“Each generation gets the Superman they need. It felt like the pendulum with Man of Steel, obviously that was a much darker grounded version, and, and we’re in a very different place, and I love that just the tagline that ‘Kindness is punk rock.'”
Goyer co-wrote Batman Begins and helped Christopher Nolan nail the story for the whole trilogy. He wrote Man of Steel (which was also produced by Nolan) and while all those films have darker, grittier aesthetics and tones, he was still won over by Superman.
“I think that [David] Corenswet is incredibly appealing. I never would have thought to use Krypto, and Krypto was delightful,” he continued.
“And then I think the guy that stole the show was Mr. Terrific, who Geoff Johns and I basically turned into a real character in the Justice Society. So I was thrilled, I thought Mr. Terrific was awesome.”
Goyer wrote the first 51 issues of a comic centered around the Justice Society of America. “Metamorpho, same. I love seeing a live action Metamorpho, and those are the kind of things that James Gunn can get away with, and God bless him because I love all these those weird quirky tertiary DC characters,” he added.
“I really enjoyed it and I was rooting for it, so I’m happy it’s been successful.”
