It’s no secret Marvel Rivals often gets called out for being a “gooner game” due to certain… revealing skins. Now, the lead developer has shared his thoughts about this very matter.
Marvel Rivals offers various types of cosmetics, including MCU-inspired costumes for the characters, that players can use in the game.
Though if there’s one type of design that’s quite popular among players, that’d be no other than, you guessed it: the more revealing skins of the bunch. Those that show off a bit more skin than the rest.
Since the early days, players were quick to show their eagerness to play the game thanks to these eye-candy cosmetics, and that discourse hasn’t let up. The lead dev is well aware of it and is actually grateful that it’s the case.
Marvel Rivals dev addresses revealing hero skins
If you’re an active player in the community, chances are, you’ve seen the number of people who thirst over in-game skins, whether that’s in a joking way or not.
While Marvel Rivals’ gameplay focuses on fast-paced 6v6 matches in a third-person setting, it’s often labeled a “gooner game” by people on social media, mainly due to skins like Invisible Woman Malice, Psylocke Blood Kariudo, or even the newly-released summer skins.
In an interview with Rivals Assembled, Creative Director Guangguang was asked what he thought about people poking fun at the game by using that term.
He responded by explaining that these were actually drawn from the comics and essentially integrated with the game’s season storyline.
“Because our design, as mentioned earlier, is inspired by classic comic themes, including some very outstanding skins, like Mantis and Psylocke’s Vengeance. These all come from classic comic designs.”
To gain players’ appreciation, he mentioned that the team would take those classic comic designs and “create some more fashionable designs based on them.”
“I think this also reflects the brand appreciation from our players. As mentioned earlier with the Squirrel Girl and Krakoa Resort skin, these are actually designs from real-world themes and seasons’ storyline,” he added.
When it comes to designs like these, Guangguang said the team would try its best to integrate the season’s story and “popular elements from real life.” Ultimately, he expressed that he’s grateful that these designs have been well received by the majority of players.
