In a heartfelt tribute to a racing icon, Mayano Top Gun’s son ran in a race with a figure of his father’s Umamusume character draped around his neck.
Mayano Top Gun was a standout on the Japanese race horse scene in the 1990s, winning four Grade 1 races: the Kikuka Sho and Arima Kinen in 1995, the Takarazuka Kinen in 1996, and the Spring Tenno Sho in 1997.
He quickly earned a strong following for his powerful late-race surges, often defying expectations. However, he passed away in 2019 at the age of 27, and now his legacy lives on in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
In Umamusume Mayano, Top Gun is reimagined as a lively, energetic girl who idolizes her seniors and strives to live up to their legacies. Her character mirrors the real horse’s grit and determination, but years after his passing, a touching tribute has brought both worlds together.
Mayano Top Gun’s son runs race with figure of his father
During a recent event in Japan, Luminox, the son of Mayano Top Gun, took part in the Soft Horse Racing Summer Series. This lighthearted and informal race series is dedicated to older or retired horses and isn’t part of official racing calendars.
Instead, Soft Horse Racing serves as a feel-good celebration of long-running or fan-favorite horses. However, what made this particular moment stand out even more was the presence of a figure of an Umamusume figure of Mayano Top Gun that had been placed around Luminox’s neck.

Photos of the event quickly spread across social media, where fans showered Luminox with love. “Every time I see this horse with the Top Gun figure, it makes my day,” wrote one fan. “Haha, this is so cute! It’s fun to see them together,” replied another commenter.
While Luminox may not have run in an official race, for Umamusume fans and racing enthusiasts alike, it was a heartfelt nod to a stallion whose legacy continues to live on.
