PortalVR 2.0 has officially launched, so you can now play VR games without actually wearing a headset. The app allows Meta Quest users to plug their headset into a PC, place it on a desk, and play SteamVR titles directly on a monitor.

The update was announced by developer Gabor Fodor, who said PortalVR 2.0 lets players access the full SteamVR ecosystem while using the Quest as a stationary tracking device rather than a worn display. Gameplay is shown on a standard monitor, with Quest controllers used for input.

How PortalVR 2.0 works

According to Fodor, PortalVR 2.0 relies on setting the Quest into developer mode and connecting it to a PC. Once plugged in, the headset acts as a controller base station and provides persistent six degrees of freedom tracking without being worn.

The setup allows players to leave the Quest connected permanently, which turns VR games into something closer to a new-age Nintendo Wii. Camera movement can be handled through a combination of webcam face tracking and controller inputs so players can lean, duck, rotate, and drag the camera view.

Fodor also noted that camera controls can be customized, with joystick touch surfaces used to spin or reposition the view during gameplay.

3D display support and compatibility

PortalVR 2.0 includes full support for 3D displays and glasses. The app works with the Samsung Odyssey 3D auto stereoscopic monitor as well as Leia 3D displays, allowing compatible users to view VR content with depth without wearing a headset.
