Borderlands 4 has only been out a short time, but fans are already finding ways to push the game’s systems, with modded guns and characters now appearing for sale on eBay.

The launch has already been surrounded by controversy, with performance issues on PC sparking backlash across forums and social media. Gearbox also drew criticism after comments from the CEO downplayed concerns about optimization, leading some players to accuse the studio of ignoring community feedback.

On top of that, Borderlands 4 introduced a new weapon modding system that lets players fine-tune parts and effects in ways never seen before in the series. While previous Borderlands games leaned heavily on random loot generation, the latest entry’s more transparent item system has opened the door for modders to create tailored weapons and sell them.

Sellers struggle to cash in on Borderlands Mods

A glance at eBay’s completed listings shows a bustling gray market of modded loot. Legendary guns and equipment are being sold for anywhere from $3 to $10 each, while maxed-out characters can fetch between $30 and $55. Despite the higher price, however, these sales haven’t translated into big money for sellers.

Speaking to Eurogamer, one modder admitted the market has been disappointing. “Not very successful. I’ve sold maybe three or four since release, which is around £15 to £20, which doesn’t even cover the costs to build the guns, but I don’t do this to make money or profit,” they said.

Part of the problem is the upfront cost of making the items. According to the seller, crafting modded gear requires paying data miners for specialized tables that break down every encrypted gun part, rarity, manufacturer, and level. These resources can cost between £50 and £100, leaving most resellers operating at a loss.

While some fans might see value in picking up overpowered guns or fully loaded characters, Borderlands 4’s gray market appears to be more of a curiosity than a viable business, and another unusual wrinkle in an already contentious launch.
