A Monster Hunter Wilds player has investigated the game’s poor performance and found that the game actually runs better based on the amount of DLC you’ve purchased.

Although Monster Hunter Wilds was positively received when released back in 2025, its performance has received a lot of scrutiny in the months since. Fans have reported constant FPS drops and technical issues, despite Capcom rolling out updates to try to address the issue.

Well, a player named ‘de_Tylmarande’ on Reddit has taken matters into their own hands and discovered that the game runs “aggressive checks” in the background to determine which paid DLC you own.

They found that these checks are one of the major causes of Wilds’ bad performance, but the more extra content you own, the better the game will run.

Monster Hunter Wilds runs worse if you don’t own DLC

The user discovered this by playing MHW on two different Steam accounts: his friend’s account, which had all the DLC installed, and his own, which had none. The first ran smoothly with few issues, while the second had frequent FPS drops while trying to perform the same tasks.

To further prove the theory, rather than spending the hundreds of dollars it would take to obtain every piece of extra content, they created a mod that tricked the game into thinking that DLC was installed. This didn’t actually grant them the content, but when the checks were run, it would be as if they were there.

Once the mod was in place, de_Tylmarande noticed that performance went “through the roof.” Even with no adjustments to the settings, the game ran buttery smooth with no dips.

Interestingly, this changed based on the amount of extra content the mod was mimicking, and the more DLC it thought was installed, the better it ran. They noted that between zero and 100 DLC packs saw a drastic improvement, while it slowed from 101 onwards, but there was still a noticeable decrease in the number of drops for each additional purchase.

As you’d expect, this has opened a can of worms, with many fans frustrated that getting their game to run properly is currently “pay to win.” Plenty of extra content has been released since launch, including four big DLC packs at $24.99, as well as smaller bundles ranging from $14.99 to $21.99.

However, the user insisted that they didn’t do any of this to badmouth Capcom, and they’ve sent their findings over to the developer. Since the post was published, software development firm Digital Foundry reached out to de_Tylmarande, and may already be “on the case.”

This isn’t even the first time they’ve helped Capcom fix an issue in one of their games, as they apparently also found a solution to an FPS problem in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
