The first trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 will drop next month, according to the sequel’s producer Todd Garner.

It’s been a long wait for the next Mortal Kombat movie (four years, to be specific), with Warner Bros and the film’s team drip-feeding fans photos of its stars (such as Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage) and small details about what to expect.

Here’s what we know: the first movie’s cast are all reprising their roles, a bunch of new characters are joining the roster (including Shao Khan and Baraka), and it’ll feature the titular tournament, unlike last time.

Also, according to Garner, it’ll be “bloodier” and “more violent” – and if you’ve been desperate to see the trailer, it’s set to drop soon.

Mortal Kombat 2 trailer is dropping in July

As confirmed by Garner, the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 will be released online sometime in July.

It’s unclear exactly which date it’ll drop, but it’s worth remembering that Warner Bros has two massive theatrical releases over the next month: F1 and Superman.

Given the first trailer is expected to be red-band (aka, full of blood and guts and not geared towards families going to see Superman), it’ll likely drop later in July. It could also be rolled out in theaters with Weapons, another major Warner Bros release hitting cinemas in August.

Garner also responded to a fan asking a question that’s been echoed across social media: why hasn’t a trailer been released yet, considering Mortal Kombat 2 is due to be released in October?

“How much time do you need? Why not release a trailer two years before it comes out? One year? Tell me exactly how many months is exactly the right time to create excitement and keep the enthusiasm alive through release? What’s the number?” he wrote.

“There are still a number of big movies coming this summer that are in the middle of their marketing cycle. We don’t want to just be thrown into the mix. We want to come out strong and build the momentum up to the day of release. Lots of good stuff planned,” Garner added.

Garner isn’t the only person who’s excited for fans to see the film. Jeremy Slater, the sequel’s writer, said seeing the reactions from the test screening audience was “one of the greatest moments of [his] life.”

“I have been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame. They were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing and they are loving it,” he told Comic Book.
