The ultra-violent trailer for Mortal Kombat II has smashed records for red-band trailers by being viewed by more than 100m times during its first 24 hours online.
It’s been a big week for fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise, with a livestream event launching new posters for forthcoming movie sequel Mortal Kombat II.
That was followed by the debut of the film’s red-band trailer, which showcased Karl Urban as new protagonist Johnny Cage, and gave fans a first look at Noob Saibot.
The trailer was well-received across the board, and shattered records for a red-band launch.
Mortal Kombat 2 trailer viewed 106.8 million times in first day
The Mortal Kombat II trailer dropped on July 17, 2025, and within 24 hours, had been viewed 106.8 million times (according to Deadline, and via a WaveMetrix data report).
That astonishing number far exceeds previous red-band records, which were held by the likes of The Suicide Squad (58 million views in 2021), Deadpool 2 (52 million views in 2018).
Part II also did double what its predecessor managed, with the last Mortal Kombat movie scoring 47 million views during its first 24 hours back in 2021.
The new trailer was accompanied by an official synopsis stating: “This time, the fan favorite champions – now joined by Johnny Cage himself – are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”
The red-band wasn’t the only new footage to emerge either, with the hilarious trailer for a fake movie titled Uncaged Fury also dropping, and managing 22.2m views in 24 hours.
