Is Mortal Kombat 3 happening? “Hopefully,” according to producer Todd Garner, and if the sequel is successful, he wants to make fans’ dreams come true.

The first Mortal Kombat movie was a modest success ($84.4 million worldwide) especially considering it dropped at the start of the pandemic. However, fans had criticisms: it was too focused on Cole Young, the editing buried the choreography, and it didn’t even include the titular contest.

Todd Garner, the producer of the franchise, has been listening to all of the feedback. The result is Mortal Kombat 2, a follow-up that’s been thoroughly brainstormed and tested to maximise the audience’s enjoyment. According to an earlier report, a test screening evoked Endgame-esque reactions, and the trailer broke a major record.

A threequel isn’t guaranteed, however, and its fate depends on the success of Mortal Kombat 2.

Producer teases plans for Mortal Kombat 3 and spinoffs

Speaking to FutureBoyWho2, Garner explained how the feedback from the first film allowed the team to “hone in on figuring out exactly what we wanted that second movie to be.”

“Now, realize, we’re hoping that this is not the end of the franchise. So, this is not like we’re just doing this movie and this is going to be it, hopefully.”

“We have a plan further down the line for things,” Garner added, noting the development of Scorpion and Bi-Han (who appears as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat 2). “Those characters have evolved. I know everybody’s waiting for Kano to get the metal plate in his eye. That will happen,” he said.

“As we go forward, nothing is set in stone… if we’re allowed to do further movies, hopefully this one does well enough, there’s chances to do other things, spinoffs, another sequel to propel the story, bring in different characters and evolve the characters that we already have.”

As for what those spinoffs could be, Garner and co. have plenty to choose from: there are 25 Mortal Kombat games, and if you’re unfamiliar with the lore, let’s just say it gets wild. The producer wants to make fans happy, so expect to see “all those fatalities” and more stages from the games if a third movie and/or spinoffs get the green light.

“However this movie is received by the public in mass, we’ll make adjustments and we’ll take that feedback… that’s what’s great about this. We can interact with each other and we’re listening and we’re gonna take that feedback in… so that it’s enjoyable for everybody,” Garner explained.

There is an enormous roster of fighters to choose from (I still have my fingers crossed for Ermac), but there’s one character we should expect to see in a threequel: Rain.

“Not only are there plans for Rain in the franchise, Rain was in the first script of the first movie, and we had to take Rain out because of the expense. But we have an incredible fight sequence with Rain that we all want to do,” Garner said.

To be clear, he’s not in Mortal Kombat 2 – unless Garner is bluffing and it’s a tease – but he’s hoping to bring that sequence to life eventually.
