A mystery billionaire is reportedly planning a dive to the Titanic shipwreck in a “couple of weeks,” two years on from the Titan sub disaster.
The Titanic and its shipwreck has, for years, been a fascination for many. There are tonnes of documentaries about the sinking, and experts believe there are still plenty of artifacts on the ocean floor.
However, the shipwreck has been off limits for two years following the Titan Sub disaster. Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush and four rich explorers were on board the sub when it imploded just minutes into its dive.
It does, however, remain something that people want to explore. Thrill seekers want to be able to say that they’ve been 12,500 feet below sea level and seen the wreckage of the historic ship.
Billionaire reportedly set to visit Titanic wreck soon
Well, according to the New York Post, a billionaire is reportedly planning a trip down to the shipwreck in the next “couple of weeks” and an announcement could come soon.
“I heard that somebody is going down to the Titanic in a couple weeks,” a source told The Post.
“What I can tell you is that it’s a billionaire. Going down there will cost $10 million. You would recognize his name. He’ll want to make an announcement that he is the first person to go to the Titanic since the tragedy.”
The Titan disaster came after Rush and Oceangate were accused of not properly maintaining the submersibles hull after it suffered damage.
Other companies have been trying to build their own submarines since then, including Patrick Lahey. The CEO of Triton Submarines told the New York Post that a new $20 million sub will be ready by 2026.
Additionally, Valve CEO Gabe Newell has commissioned a new $300 million research vessel through his Inkfish organization that can reach the Titanic’s depth.
The RV6000 is designed to reach depths of up to 6,000 meters and will also support two-man submersibles for further exploration.
