NASA has announced a new partnership with Netflix, bringing its extraordinary programming from NASA+ to the streaming service – but if you don’t want to wait, there’s an easy way to watch it now.

Netflix is home to some of the best sci-fi movies of all time – many of which take place in space, like Oxygen, Starship Troopers, Spaceman, and The Cloverfield Paradox (okay, maybe not that one). It also has incredible documentaries, like Our Universe and Apollo: Survival.

If you’ve still got more space in your viewing schedule for… well, space, here’s some good news: NASA+ is coming to Netflix this summer.

When it launches on the platform, subscribers will be able to stream “rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage, and breathtaking live views of Earth from the International Space Station.”

NASA Plus is already free and available to stream now

Here’s the thing: you don’t need Netflix to watch NASA Plus. You can just go to NASA’s website and start streaming everything for free – you don’t even need to sign up!

This includes live events; for example, you can watch the Progress 92 cargo ship launch on July 3, followed by its docking on July 5, all free of charge. There is a huge selection of shows, documentaries, and short films about the history of NASA and space travel, as well as educational resources for young, aspiring spacefarers, and they already have a free app you can download on your phone.

That’s not to say it isn’t great that NASA+ is coming to Netflix; being able to conveniently livestream the ISS’ view of Earth on a 4K TV will be an amazing screensaver. However, if you’re really interested in the channel’s content, you don’t need to wait for Netflix to add any of it.

Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+ at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, said: “The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience.

“Together, we’re committed to a Golden Age of Innovation and Exploration – inspiring new generations – right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone.”

There is a possibility of Netflix-exclusive content, but this hasn’t been confirmed. “Additional programming details and schedules will be announced ahead of launch,” the press release reads, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates.
