There’s another Big Bang Theory spinoff on the way, but its storyline is so insanely bizarre you’d never be able to guess it. Here’s a hint: it involves the multiverse.

When The Big Bang Theory first aired in 2007, few could have imagined it would still be going, in one form or another, all this time later. Well, that’s the timeline we find ourselves in, as after 12 seasons of the mainline series, spinoffs have continued to carry the torch.

First was Young Sheldon, which had a seven-season run on its own. Then, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage hit the silver screen in late 2024 and has since been renewed for another run, though that’s not all.

Back in 2023, we first caught wind of another spinoff, one involving comic book store owner Stuart Bloom. Two years later, that very idea has now been greenlit at HBO Max, as Variety reported, and it has the most radical synopsis you could possibly imagine.

New Big Bang Theory spinoff’s crazy synopsis

Officially titled ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,’ the show brings Kevin Sussman front and center as the titular character. Fans will also see Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie all return as Denise, Bert, and Barry Kripke, respectively.

However, they’re not exactly going to be up the usual day-in-the-life antics as we’ve seen throughout the mainline series and the earlier two spinoffs. Not even close. The official synopsis for this new spinoff is as follows:

“Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.”

So there you have it, a multiverse done Big Bang-style. Sheldon and Leonard somehow built a device that, when destroyed, brings about countless timelines. It’s up to Stuart to restore order, or at least try to.

It’s been described as the type of show “the characters from Big Bang Theory would watch”, as screenwriter Zak Penn put it. “Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about,” co-creator Chuck Lorre added. “There’s a lot of CGI.”

Currently, there’s no word on when the new spinoff may air. Having only just been given the green light, it’d be safe to expect a 2026 run at the earliest.
