A trailer for Sword and Fairy 4: Remake has dropped, and many players think the combat looks very similar to Expedition 33.

2025 has, no doubt, been a huge year for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While the turn-based RPG was already successful at launch, it was during The Game Awards that it truly turned heads.

After sweeping multiple awards and hitting yet another major milestone, the game has firmly established itself as one of the year’s biggest success stories.

Still very much a hot topic, fans have recently pointed out a new game that looks strikingly similar to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Despite only releasing a trailer recently, many are already dubbing it as one of the first ‘clones.’

Fans call out new game for looking like Clair Obscur Expedition 33

The game in question is none other than Sword and Fairy 4: Remake. It’s an upcoming remake of The Legend of Sword and Fairy 4, originally released in 2007. For fans of the Chinese RPG series, the name may already be familiar, as the franchise dates back to 1995.

In the trailer, viewers can get a glimpse of the remake’s story and gameplay. It starts off by showcasing the game’s visually appealing landscapes and characters before shifting focus to its combat.

For a lot of fans, it instantly reminded them of Sandfall Interactive’s RPG. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s combat is flashy and dynamic despite being turn-based, with striking skill effects that make every sequence pop.

Meanwhile, the combat in Sword and Fairy 4: Remake looks notably similar, spanning from its combat mechanics and parrying to the overall UI design.

Because of this, even though the game’s release date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s already drawing comparisons to the 2025 Game of the Year.

“We got Expedition 33 at home. E33 at home,” one person wrote.

“I think, imo, my main point of contention with it is that it…borrows TOO MUCH from E33 from what I’ve seen so far and doesn’t quite have its own combat identity. I don’t want to say it’s ‘stolen’, but it really does look like a game with an E33 skin slapped on it,” mentioned another.

While many said that it looks like a ‘copy’, there were others who argued that there are also other games that have similar camera angles and UI as E33.

Details about Sword and Fairy 4 Remake are still light at the moment, but the publisher described it as a “single-player turn-based RPG reborn in Unreal Engine 5 with the latest technology.” It’s also coming to PC and consoles.
