A new StarCraft game is reportedly set to be unveiled at BlizzCon 2026, however, it might not be exactly the type of game you’d expect.

It’s been 16 years since StarCraft 2 hit store shelves, and a full decade since its last expansion. Despite the absence, the real-time strategy game series remains among the most beloved and popular in the genre.

As Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier first touched on in his 2024 book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, a new game in the franchise has been in development. Details have been few and far between ever since, though, but we now have some fresh intel to go off.

According to a report from Jez Corden of Windows Central, the future of StarCraft will be on display at BlizzCon 2026, but the new game set to feature may not be a traditional RTS.

In a lengthy report covering the year ahead for Xbox, Corden touched on the return of BlizzCon, Blizzard’s own hugely popular physical event that hasn’t been held in person since 2023.

Expected at the showcase are expansions for World of Warcraft and Diablo 4, alongside new updates for Overwatch 2. However, a new StarCraft game is reportedly set to ‘headline’ the event.

Is this new game StarCraft 3? Well, anything is possible, but it doesn’t look likely. As Schreier’s reporting indicated, a StarCraft game has been in the works for a number of years now, but it’s framed as a third-person shooter.

Beyond that, we have little else to go off. There’s no quite telling if it will feature a single-player campaign or focus primarily on multiplayer, nor is there any indication of how it might play moment to moment.

Of course, experienced StarCraft fans will know all too well this is far from the first time Blizzard has pursued a new direction for the series. Back in 2002, the studio announced StarCraft Ghost, a third-person shooter with stealth mechanics.

After years of intrigue and mystery, the game was ultimately shelved by 2006. Two decades on, could it finally be time for StarCraft to get a shooter that’s long been envisioned?

BlizzCon 2026 is scheduled for September 12–13, where we’re reportedly set to get our answers.
