More parts of the United States are moving to ban AI from getting married and owning homes, with Ohio lawmakers wanting to shut a pretty big loophole.
As AI, artificial intelligence, has become an increasingly big part of everyday life, there have been a few stories of humans becoming romantically entangled with chatbots.
Just like the plot of the movie ‘Her’, several humans have found companionship from the likes of ChatGPT and Grok. The AI chatbots have been rather complimentary of their human partners, leading to a few labeling the AI has their ‘soulmate’ and getting engaged to it.
Well, getting married to your partner is the highest level of any relationship, but if you’re planning on doing so in Ohio, Washington, or Utah, you’re out of luck.
Ohio looking to ban AI from getting married
Senators across Ohio are introducing a new bill, titled HB 469, which will look to make marriages with AI illegal. It would also prevent artificial intelligence from owning property and being able to make lawful decisions for its human counterparts, such as having the power of attorney.
Lawmakers aren’t concerned with robots walking down the aisle and exchanging rings, but what happens when they’re given similar legal powers to married humans. “It is a legal loophole that a system can get embedded into,” Republican Thad Claggett said.
“This bill is meant to close legal loopholes that could let companies or bad actors blame their AI programs instead of taking responsibility.”
The bill has support across the aisle, too, with Democrat Erika White, adding that it will “protect people in Ohio from things we won’t even be able to foresee.”
As noted, Utah and Washington have also passed bills banning legal personhood for artificial intelligence. So, there is precedent for what Ohio wants to do.
