A newlywed couple in India are calling it quits because their cat, dog, and rabbit just couldn’t get along, causing palpable tension in their home.

In a unique case of irreconcilable differences, this Indian couple’s spat is taking social media by storm as they seek separation due to their pets’ behavior.

Court documents obtained by India Today’s Bhopal Desk show that an unnamed couple, who tied the knot in December 2024, are filing for divorce just eight months after taking their vows.

As reported by the outlet, the duo initially bonded over their love of animals — but this shared interest soon turned to irritation when they moved in together.

The husband, a Bhopal resident, owned a dog, a fish, and a pet rabbit. His wife, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, moved in with her cat.

Their relationship went to the dogs — literally

Although things were peaceful at first, their animals soon clashed with each other. Court documents include statements from the wife, who said her hubby’s dog “continuously barks at her cat, leaving it scared and stressed, sometimes even refusing to eat.”

According to the husband, his wife’s cat was to blame, claiming it “often sits near the fish tank and stares at the fish” and saying it has “turned violent towards the dog multiple times.”

Other sources state that tension was already brewing between the couple before they even moved in, with Bhaskar English reporting that the husband had preemptively asked his wife not to bring her cat with her after marriage.

“Despite this, she brought her cat from her parental home,” he said.

Now, the two are in family court, seeking divorce as things continue to escalate between their furry friends to unbearable levels.

India Today received a statement from the counselor in charge of their case, Shail Awasthi, who revealed that the couple is currently undergoing marriage counselling to help resolve their problems.

“The couple has been married for only eight months, and both are pet lovers. Their disputes over pets have been ongoing for some time. One round of counselling has already taken place, and the next session is scheduled in October,” he told the outlet.

“People seek companionship in pets, sometimes placing them above human relationships,” Awasthi said in an additional statement to NDTV.

“When both partners refuse to adjust, marriages like these collapse. It reflects a growing trend of people taking relationships lightly, believing that pets can substitute for human bonds.”
