Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has hinted that the next mainline Legend of Zelda game could take inspiration from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the spinoff title developed with Koei Tecmo.

Unlike Tears of the Kingdom, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment revisits Hyrule’s ancient past, centering on the Imprisonment War and the events that led to Ganondorf being sealed away.

Like previous Hyrule Warriors entries, Age of Imprisonment blends Zelda lore with large-scale action combat, pitting players against massive enemy hordes while controlling a cast of familiar characters.

While the series is more action-focused, Aonuma acknowledged that the game has had a meaningful creative impact on the Zelda team.

Zelda team inspired by Age of Imprisonment

In an interview with 4Gamer, Eiji Aonuma revealed that Age of Imprisonment has inspired the Zelda team, even if they didn’t get to release a Zelda game first on the Switch 2.

“Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the first Zelda title on Nintendo Switch 2. To be honest, we wanted to be the ones to release the ‘first’ one ourselves (laughs),” he said.

“Still, the inspiration we’ve gained from collaborating with Koei Tecmo like this may be reflected in the next Zelda we create. As you play Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, we hope you’ll imagine those possibilities and look forward to our Zelda.”

While Aonuma stopped short of confirming any specific mechanics or themes, the comments suggest that ideas explored in Age of Imprisonment could influence the direction of the next mainline entry.

For now, Nintendo has not announced when the next mainline Zelda game will release, but Aonuma’s comments make it clear the team is already thinking ahead.
