Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about the cost of the Switch 2, explaining the company’s reasons for justifying a higher price tag than previous consoles.
Speaking during a June 27 shareholder Q&A session, Furukawa acknowledged that the Switch 2 is more expensive than previous Nintendo consoles, emphasizing that the focus is on delivering a product that feels worth the money.
Nintendo defends Switch 2 price
One of the main points raised in the meeting was how younger players might struggle to engage if the Switch 2 was out of reach financially.
“Nintendo Switch 2 has a higher price point than past platforms like the Family Computer system
(Famicom),” said one shareholder, adding, “I am concerned that this might reduce opportunities for young children to engage with it. How will you address this issue?”
Furukawa said the company was watching closely to see if the price became a roadblock to younger audiences but that the price was reflective of the quality of the console.
“We believe the pricing of Nintendo Switch 2 is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers,” he said, adding, “It is true that Nintendo Switch 2 has a higher price point than our past gaming systems.”
“We are creating various opportunities outside of our gaming systems for young children to engage with Nintendo characters and game worlds, with one of the ultimate goals being that they will eventually play on our gaming systems.”
“We are closely monitoring to what degree the price of the system might become a barrier,” Furukawa concluded.
The Switch 2’s price has been a hot topic since its reveal. The Q&A didn’t touch on the topic of tariffs and their contribution to price increases in some regions.
