Nintendo is seeking $4.5 million in damages from a Reddit moderator accused of operating piracy networks that allegedly distributed thousands of Nintendo Switch games.
As reported by VGC, the defendant, named in court documents as James Williams and known online as Archbox, previously moderated a subreddit linked to Switch piracy.
Nintendo claims Williams helped run so-called “Pirate Shops” that hosted unauthorized copies of first-party titles, while also sharing software designed to bypass the console’s protections. The company further alleges that he solicited Nintendo eShop gift cards from users to fund the operation.

Court filings allege that Williams has been involved in piracy activity since 2019. Nintendo says it first contacted him in March 2024, demanding he shut down the sites. While he allegedly acknowledged the violations, the company claims he failed to comply and later ignored court deadlines.
The lawsuit focuses on 30 major Switch titles, with Nintendo requesting the maximum statutory damages of $150,000 per work, bringing the total to $4.5 million. According to VGC, Nintendo could also have sought additional damages for trafficking in circumvention software, but chose not to in this case.
Since Williams hasn’t responded in court, Nintendo is now asking the judge to rule in its favor by default. A hearing is scheduled for October 24, 2025, where the court will decide whether to impose damages and injunctions to prevent further infringement.
The case underscores Nintendo’s continued aggressive stance against piracy and community networks tied to the Switch. While the allegations remain unproven in court, the outcome could set a precedent for how the company targets similar operations in the future.
