The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially become the fastest-selling console of all time in the United States, clearing a 12-year-old record set by the PlayStation 4.
Hype surrounding the mysterious Switch successor in the lead-up was palpable. Fans were clamoring for any scrap of news they could get their hands on as millions eagerly awaited Nintendo’s next big hardware launch.
Well, it’s now clear fans have put money where their mouth is, following through on the pre-release excitement to shatter records.
Reports indicated the Switch 2 sold over 3.5 million units in its first four days on the market. Now, data from industry-leading analytics firm Circana has delved a bit deeper. Their numbers show 1.6 million sales within the United States alone, making it the region’s fastest-selling piece of hardware in gaming history.
Nintendo Switch 2 makes history as fastest-selling hardware ever
According to Circana’s data, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold 1.6 million units through to consumers in the month of June. That places it a whopping 500,000 units ahead of the second-fastest-selling console in history, the PS4, which sold 1.1 million units in November, 2013.
This record-breaking launch also drove the biggest June on record, as video game hardware sales generated $978 million USD alone, a 249% increase over June, 2024.
Furthermore, Mario Kart World came in as the third-best-selling game of the month. However, it reached third place overall without this data including copies bundled in. So anyone who purchased the Mario Kart World bundle isn’t counted.
All up, a staggering 82% of US Switch 2 owners also own a copy of Mario Kart World, as per Circana’s Executive Director Mat Piscatella.
