Two games that feature artwork strikingly similar to One Piece have been spotted on the Nintendo Switch eShop, sparking backlash from fans.
As reported by Automaton, two pirate-themed games have appeared on the Nintendo eShop despite featuring character designs similar to Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. The games in question are Pirate Anime Quest: One Boys’ Journey, A Piece of Island Love, and Pirate Anime Quest: One Girls’ Journey, A Piece of Island Love.
Both games are published by Red Fables and are set to be released on May 29. While there is no gameplay video, both appear similar to the Suika Game that went viral in 2023. The official description for both notes that players must match various fruits via “strategic combinations” to unlock “daring images” and endings.
Players will also meet “irresistible pirates” during their puzzle-filled journey, which appear to be unlocked by earning points during puzzle stages. Well, these “irresistible pirates” have quickly caught the attention of One Piece fans.
One Piece fans slam Switch eShop puzzle games
“Yep, that’s not [Oda’s] art style, that’s straight up mashing characters into one. Nami’s face and tattoo, Luffy’s body, and Katakuri’s clothing style,” wrote a commenter on the One Piece Reddit page.
“Hell, even the tag line of the game has the words One and Piece right next to each other. It‘s almost like it’s supposed to be satire if they weren’t asking for money.”
While many fans were quick to call out the price of the titles, the similarities, and overall oddness of the character designs caught the most flak.
One commenter remarked on the use of clothing, which they believe indicates the use of AI: “I love looking closely at AI slop for tells that it’s a dumbass program with no conception of reality,” they responded.
“Like that is not how buttons work, those shoulderpads and tassels are bad, and boy, I’ve noticed AI cannot grok how belts work.”
As of writing, both games can be pre-ordered for $5.96 each and are scheduled to release on May 29.
