OpenAI’s rapid expansion could come with a massive financial cost, according to a report that raises questions about how sustainable the company is.

As highlighted by Windows Central, OpenAI could be facing losses of up to $14 billion by 2026 as it continues to scale its AI infrastructure. The huge costs are tied to training large AI models, running data centres, and expanding its product lineup, all of which continue to outpace revenue growth.

Despite OpenAI having secured billions through backing and high-profile partnerships, the report notes that the company is still losing money.

While those projections are not official guidance from OpenAI itself, they reflect growing concern around the sustainability of the AI arms race.

Currently, most of OpenAI’s spending stems from the infrastructure and energy costs required to train and run its most advanced models.

According to Statista, training advanced generative models can cost tens to hundreds of millions of dollars in computer power alone, with broader cloud spending running into the billions annually as companies burn through GPU hours and data-centre resources to train and serve them.

On January 20, 2026, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella even warned that AI will lose public support if it fails to deliver benefits that justify its growing energy demands.
