The original E3 demo for Halo 2, which contained content ultimately cut from the final version of Bungie’s sequel, has leaked online, giving players access to the game as it was shown during the game’s 2003 reveal.
The leaked files relate to the demo created by Bungie for the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2003, where Halo 2 was first shown running on the original Xbox.
That demo became legendary at the time for its cinematic presentation and gameplay sequences, many of which were later changed or cut before release.
Leak includes the original Xbox demo build
The leak, which appeared on 4Chan on December 26 and was later verified and archived by video game preservation site Hidden Palace, contains the original Xbox build of the E3 demo rather than a recreated version.
That includes the iconic ‘Earth City’ level demoed at the convention that would ultimately be cut from the final game. The original gameplay showcase at E3 2003 can be watched below for reference.
While a version of the E3 demo was later recreated for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, that build was reconstructed years after release and did not use the original demo code. The newly leaked files appear to be the real project data Bungie used internally for the 2003 presentation.
The original demo has long been a point of fascination for fans due to how different it looked and played compared to the retail version of Halo 2. Bungie has previously said the demo relied heavily on scripted sequences and systems that were later reworked as development progressed.
