Blizzard has revealed some of the backstory behind Jetpack Cat in Overwatch, and now players don’t trust her at all.
As part of this big Season 1 update, Overwatch introduced five new faces to the hero roster. The standout so far has been Jetpack Cat, a flying feline who can hover above the map, heal allies, and relocate them with ease.
But while most new heroes come with a wealth of lore explaining who they are and where they come from, the cat’s backstory has remained something of a mystery.
At least, that was the case until Blizzard posted a video narrated by Brigitte, offering a little explanation as to how a cat came to pilot their own mech and went on to join the team.
Jetpack Cat’s backstory has Overwatch fans suspicious
In the video, Brig explains that she “rescued this pretty kitty from between some rocket parts in the main landing bay” of Watchpoint: Gibraltar. This led her to dust off some old projects as she looked to prepare the cat, named Fika, for battle.
The story is full of references to the actual development of Jetpack Cat, which was initially cancelled years ago before being revived.
However, based on a couple of elements from the video, players think there’s more to Fika than meets the eye.
First of all, it wasn’t explained how a cat managed to get all the way into Overwatch HQ unnoticed. Then, a line describes how she helped solve a scientific problem by suspiciously knocking over some blueprints, suggesting that she’s more intelligent than the average kitty.
After this clip was posted, fans on Reddit have been coming up with their own theories on who Jetpack Cat actually is.
“Okay, she’s gotta be a villain or spy of some kind, no way she’s just a cat. Maybe from the smart animals on the Lunar Colony,” wrote one player, while another agreed: “She’s a villain from Horizon Lunar Colony I’m calling it now.”
“Moira has an interaction where she says something about her being intelligent. Moira might know more about her origins somehow,” mentioned another comment.
For those who don’t know, the Horizon Lunar Colony was a base located on the moon where scientists investigated “the effects of prolonged extraterrestrial habitation” on both humans and animals, leading to the creation of Winston and Wrecking Ball.
