Peacemaker Season 2 revolves around Rick Flag Sr. going after Chris Smith over the death of his son, but James Gunn has revealed that the series will also connect to his Superman movie, and specifically the Justice Gang.

The Peacemaker panel at Comic-Con featured the debut of the Season 2 trailer, in which Chris Smith (John Cena) discovers a portal to an alternate dimension where “the grass is greener.”

Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is also hell-bent on vengeance because of the death of his son Rick Flag Jr., which connects the show to 2021 DC movie The Suicide Squad.

While the series will also address the events of James Gunn’s recently released Superman, and Peacemaker’s desire to be part of a specific superhero team. Meaning mild SPOILERS ahead.

Peacemaker “really wants to be part of the Justice Gang”

Peacemaker’s Superman cameo gets a big laugh midway through the movie, when the Man of Steel’s motives are questioned, and Chris Smith appears on a news show to say he always suspected something was up with the super-powered alien.

“Can’t say I’m surprised,” says Peacemaker, “Guys like this, they’ve always got a whole bunch of dark, ugly secrets. He thinks he’s better than everybody else.”

When asked if Chris Smith still feels that way in Season 2 of his show, James Gunn told IGN: “I think that Peacemaker probably admires Superman a little bit more than he did. You know, we see him in the movie, and he’s talking crap about Superman, and I think that he probably admires him a little bit more than he did beforehand.”

Gunn adds that Peacemaker has an ulterior motive for changing his tune regarding the Man of Steel, which involves Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific.

Gunn: “He really wants to get in with the Justice Gang. So he’s not going to say any more mean things about Superman, knowing they’re his pals.”

When then asked if Peacemaker would walk back those aforementioned Supes comments, Gunn says: “He’d walk it back. He’s got no backbone when it comes to stuff like that.”

Season 2 is a redemption story

As for what Season 2 of the series is really about, Gunn says: “The theme of Peacemaker 2 – if anything – is about redemption. This is a character who knows he did wrong in the past. He’s changed dramatically from Season 1.

“The one thing I didn’t want to do was have Peacemaker behave exactly like he did at the beginning of Season 1. We saw dramatic things happen to him and the way he’s connected to other people in Season 1, and he has changed because of that. His friendship with Leota Adebayo has changed him completely.

“Now this is a new Peacemaker who is struggling to try to be the best person he can be. Often failing. But really trying his best to do that, then all of a sudden his past won’t let him go. Whether it’s his relationship with his father who is now gone. Or his relationship with Rick Flag Jr.’s dad. So it’s really about that struggle, about looking for redemption, and also looking for love. There is a love story.”
