A pizza restaurant in Iowa had a brilliant response after Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy lied to employees about how good their pizza actually was.
Dave Portnoy’s pizza reviews can be a major godsend for restaurants and drive waves of new customers to check out a high-scored pie.
On October 2, Portnoy was in Urbandale, Iowa, and checked out a place called Pepp’s Pizzeria.
While he was impressed with the slice he tried, he deemed it a 7.3/10. A decent score, but far from the upper echelon of great pizza scores he’d handed out.
To “not be a jerk,” Dave ended up lying to the employees, saying he gave it a 7.6, causing the staff to break out in applause.
After leaving, Portnoy confessed that he wished he had told them the truth, but luckily, the pizzeria was good sports about the whole thing and addressed the fake score in a social media post.
Pizzeria has brilliant reply to Dave Portnoy’s fake review score
On Instagram, Pepp’s Pizzeria issued a response to the score, admitting that the lie “hurt” but they still appreciated Dave showing up and trying their pizza.
“7.3 is still a great score. But we had to have a little fun with this,” they said, revealing shirts they started selling that read “one lie, everyone knows the rules” with the real score crossed out.
The shirt is a play on Dave’s iconic “one bite” slogan, which he uses for his pizza reviews.
“Dave, you gotta buy one and you gotta buy one for your Barstool staff. It’s all good and fun. We really appreciate you coming by and all you do for the pizza community.”
Fans of the pizza joint were impressed with how they handled the score, calling the response “gold.”
“Great response! Take my money,” one commented.
“Way to roll with the punches on this and capitalize on it,” one chimed in.
“Love the response! It’s fantastic,” someone else agreed.
Time will tell if Dave’s review and this new merch help make Pepp’s a staple when it comes to Iowa pizza. Surprisingly, Portnoy has found many of the area’s restaurants to have good quality pies, handing out a series of mid-7 scores during his trip.
