Pokemon Legends Z-A has given Gastly another makeover, its third redesign in just three years.

Gastly has always been one of those Pokemon you can’t help but notice – partly because it’s a classic, and partly because its look keeps changing.

Back in 2022, Legends Arceus darkened its smog, making it feel heavier and far gloomier than the original artwork. Scarlet and Violet reused the model but lightened things back up, closer to its original palette.

Now Legends Z-A has split the difference, and fans are already arguing about which version nailed it best.

The new look arrived in the latest Legends Z-A trailer, which showed off more of Lumiose City. Catching, battling, and even Mega Evolutions are back, all in real time.

So what’s changed? Gastly’s core is still there: black orb body, glaring eyes, and that permanent smirk. But the gas cloud is different again. It’s thicker and more vivid closer to the body, then fades out at the edges.

The glow in its eyes feels sharper, almost cartoonishly bright, closer to how some older fans remember it from the anime. Shiny hunters will be relieved too, since this version is far easier to tell apart in the wild.

In the replies, fans have already started weighing in. One wrote, “The Gengar line gets the best treatment except for Gengar’s regular shiny. 😭”

Another said, “SV Gastly was horrendous. I remember trying to shiny hunt one and from a slight distance they all look blue.”

Others were more positive: “The effect it’s giving off to me reminds me of the classic anime where it’s more vivid and concentrated nearer to the main body. The edge is thinner because it’s where the gas starts to dissipate and that’s a pretty cool detail to go for!”
