Streamer ProfessorRex has taken automation in gaming to a new level by building a controller rig that plays Pokemon Legends Z-A for him, all in pursuit of the coveted Shiny Charm.
The Twitch streamer, known for his creative Pokemon setups, designed a machine to handle one of the game’s most time-consuming tasks: battling 1,000 trainers to complete Mable’s Research. Instead of grinding for days manually, ProfessorRex used a turbo controller locked inside a foam-padded box to continuously mash the A button, while a Prusa MK4 3D printer pressed and released the ZL button to keep targeting opponents automatically.
According to the creator, the setup lets his character battle non-stop inside one of Lumiose City’s restaurants, where trainers can be challenged repeatedly. The automation allows for endless battles with little to no player input, freeing him from the repetitive process that many fans have called one of Legends Z-A’s toughest requirements.
Fans are finding creative ways to complete Mable’s Research
Players have been searching for shortcuts to finish Mable’s lengthy set of research objectives, which must all be completed to unlock the Shiny Charm — a key item that boosts Shiny Pokemon encounter rates. While some have turned to the Z-A Royale for faster trainer spawns at night, ProfessorRex’s hands-free method may be the most elaborate yet.
The setup has quickly gone viral in Pokémon communities, with fans calling it “genius” while others criticized GameFreak for making a gameplay loop so boring that players are willing to find any way not to play the game.
That said, ProfessorRex said this could be done easily without the need for a $700 printer. You just need a high level Garchomp, his was level 100 in the video, and the item Rocky Helmet. This will allow you to one shot every Pokemon at the Restaurant Le Nah.
And as a bonus, this doubles as a way to farm money.
