A Pokemon Trading Card Game collector has lost thousands of dollars’ worth of sealed products and cards after a sewage flood ruined his entire collection.

The story comes from Reddit user Substantial-Pie-4973, who shared photos of the heartbreaking loss on the r/PokemonTCG subreddit. According to his post, the flood occurred in his grandmother’s basement, where he and his wife had been temporarily storing their belongings while house-hunting.

The collector explained that a burst sewage line flooded the basement while he was away, soaking everything for up to three days before being discovered. Among the damaged items were binders full of cards, sealed Elite Trainer Boxes, and booster boxes — many of which had to be thrown away due to water damage.

“Category 3 water damage can be super harmful and porous items like cards are not safely salvageable,” he wrote. “Insurance told me they could only give me money for the amount of cardboard lost since I didn’t insure my collection like you would for expensive jewelry.”

The Redditor said he had started rebuilding his collection after graduating college in 2019 and had grown it to include a large sealed product display. Photos attached to the post show dozens of boxes and binders soaked and warped beyond repair.

Despite the financial loss, the collector said it was the sentimental value that hurt most, years of collecting memories “gone before I could blink.” His post quickly gained attention across the Pokemon TCG community, with fans offering condolences and urging collectors to review their insurance and storage plans.
