Scalpers swiftly cleaned out the Pokemon World Championships pop-up store, snatching up exclusive items before legitimate fans had a chance to buy them.
Despite The Pokemon Company enforcing several measures to curb the behavior, including purchase limits and lottery systems, scalpers still managed to secure multiple items.
Listings for various collectibles only available at the Championships’ Anaheim venue have already appeared on eBay and elsewhere at massively inflated prices.
Videos recorded by attendees showed a huge number of people grabbing anything they could from the shelves. One person can be overheard saying, “It’s a bloodbath in here, holy sh*t.”
Organizers step in to prevent Pokemon pandemonium
In an update on the second day of the event, the same user noted how organizers had “fixed” the issue of crowds rushing to get merchandise by implementing a staggered entry system.
In addition, the shelves showed plenty of stock of various merchandise, although it’s unclear if the most sought-after items, including TCG products, were still available.
The annual event, which always houses a merch store, is focused primarily on showcasing talent across multiple Pokemon games, including the physical Trading Card Game, Pokemon Unite, Go, and the latest entries in the core RPG series (Scarlet & Violet).
Winners of each fixture will share a $2 million prize pool, with entrants also receiving exclusive cards not available anywhere else.
