A police training course has gone viral after it was revealed that they get volunteers drunk, first thing in the morning, to train new recruits.
On October 21, Denver news reporter Mark Salinger took to Instagram to reveal that the Colorado State Police have been seeking volunteers to get drunk in order to train new recruits on detecting drunk drivers.
“This is what they call a wet lab. In order to train cadets to spot drunk drivers, they need to get people drunk. They get a bunch of volunteers to come in and drink, but this is all down to a science,” Sallinger said.
He pointed out that one trooper even calls out exactly how many drinks a certain person needs in order to hit the right blood alcohol content level to blow as a drunk driver. Of course, they’re not actually put behind the wheel of a car. The drunkards are just there to take mock roadside exams like walking in a straight line and reciting the alphabet.
Police tested drunk volunteers for drink driving training
Naturally, no one passed any of the field sobriety tests, and all of the volunteers would have been arrested in real-life situations.
After Sallinger posted the video, plenty of Instagram users were lining up to get involved with the next practice tests. “My employer does provide one volunteer day…,” one joked. “Where can I volunteer?” another asked.
“I’d like to see AI steal my job now,” another added. “I need you to go get a double. Yes officer,” another commented.
It isn’t the first instance of police requiring volunteers for tests that has gone viral. The Ocean City Police Department in Maryland were overwhelmed with offers for help when they were seeking volunteers to help with weed detection.
According to the police, in just over four hours, they “received an overwhelming number of participant sign-ups.”
