Police officers in Fullerton, CA were left stunned after a driver tried to use a ‘get out of jail free’ card from the board game ‘Monopoly’ to get out of a traffic ticket.
Unfortunately, Monopoly rules don’t apply to real life, but this driver sure wished they did.
In a moment that’s going viral on social media, officers in Fullerton, California pulled over a driver for an unspecified traffic violation sometime in early November 2025.
After approaching the offending vehicle, the officer on duty was stunned to see that they got more than the driver’s license and registration. They also handed over a ‘get out of jail free’ card from the popular board game ‘Monopoly.’

For those who haven’t played the classic American board game, this particular card allows players to skip a turn in jail and continue playing. It’s so iconic that the term ‘get out of jail free’ has become a popular phrase in the USA to refer to people who want to take the easy way out of a sticky situation of their own making.
While it was a humorous way for the driver to lighten an otherwise tense moment, they still got handed an actual citation. However, they probably didn’t count on going viral.
Fullerton police posted a photo of the card on Instagram on November 5, which has since racked up over 8,000 likes and numerous comments laughing at the ordeal.
“You never know what’s going to happen on a traffic stop,” they captioned the post.
“One of our officers recently pulled over a driver for a traffic violation. In a last-ditch effort to get out of a citation, the driver handed over a Monopoly ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card.
“The officer had a good laugh, reminded the driver that while creativity is appreciated, it’s not exactly a legal defense, and told him to save the card for a rainy day. He left with a smile — and a real citation.”
Rubbing even more salt in the wound, the department used a series of hilarious hashtags underneath their post, including “#communitychestdeclined,’ ‘#donotcollect200,’ and ‘#donotpassgo.’
Commenters couldn’t help but laugh at the funny exchange, with one writing, “Should’ve pulled out the Uno reverse card.”
“Technically, they didn’t go to jail, so it worked,” another remarked.
“At least give him a warning for that!” another pleaded.
