A prominent Arknights illustrator has been fired after they were found guilty of plagiarizing assets from Capcom’s Monster Hunter series.

Cenm0 is one of the most prominent illustrators in Arknights, a popular gacha mobile tower defense game. They were known for designing character and outfit designs for Bubble, Jessica, Rockrock, Shalem, Tachanka, Ray, and Ascalon.

However, it has been found that Cenm0 used assets from Monster Hunter in the new Ascalon skin. Fans discovered that the cape’s design bore a striking resemblance to the wings of Shagaru Magala, a fan-favorite monster from Monster Hunter 4.

Posts on Chinese gaming forums quickly went viral, with players providing side-by-side comparisons of the cosmetic and Capcom’s original monster design.

After seeing the viral posts, Arknight’s developer, Hypergryph, quickly replaced the artwork and launched an internal investigation. However, Cenm0 has now issued a public apology, admitting to the accusations.

Arknights designer fired following plagiarism scandal

On June 23, Cenm0 posted the following apology on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, which we’ve machine translated below:

“After packing up my belongings at my workstation and digital screen, I hereby solemnly apologize and say goodbye to everyone. I fully accept all punishments decided by the project team. People must bear the consequences of their mistakes.

“Ascalon is a charming character. Her beauty is the result of many people’s hard work. As a co-creator, I should have protected her image, but I introduced a flaw.

“As a fan of both Arknights and Monster Hunter, my mind is still frozen. I can’t understand why I was so lazy and hurt fans on both sides. I’m sorry this apology came too late.

“I revised it many times, struggling to express my regret. I don’t know how to face two things I love so much. I can only thank the critical voices that helped me reflect and repent.

“I hope I can make up for what I’ve done to the Arknights community and to Ascalon. I was wrong, and I’m sorry.”

Hypergryph has not publicly commented on Cenm0’s removal, but Ascalon’s skin has since been updated to remove the plagiarized elements.
