Professional footballer goes viral for getting engaged on pitch and breaking up days later

A Costa Rican footballer has gone viral after his post-match engagement lasted less than a week, with opposition fans now mocking him over it. 

Marriage proposals during sporting events are nothing new. Fans have been proposing to their parents at their favorite team’s games for years. Yet, the players who play in those games usually decide to keep their engagements away from a stadium full of people.

However, that wasn’t the case for Costa Rican footballer Derrikson. The 24-year-old, who plays for Xelajú in Guatemala’s National League Clausura, proposed to his girlfriend, Wendy, after a 4-2 win over Marquense on February 15. 

The pair sealed their engagement with a hug and a kiss, and a video of the proposal spread like wildfire on social media. 

However, just a few days later, on February 18, the midfielder announced that the pair had scrapped their engagement. 

“Yes, it’s true that my relationship (engagement) ended. It was a difficult personal situation, like any breakup, but I prefer to handle it with respect and maturity,” Derrikson posted on Instagram Stories.

“I’m not going to speak ill of anyone or go into details, because it was a relationship that was important to me at the time. I’m now focused on my career, my team, and continuing to grow as a person. I appreciate everyone’s support and hope you can respect this moment. Thank you.”

As per La Nacion, Wendy also addressed with a social media post of her own, saying: “In the end, there will never be a better answer than silence.” His ex has locked her Instagram profile since the split. 

Derrikson has also been mocked by opposition fans over the scrapped engagement. A number of them have taken to his social media posts with the message “y tu novia?” which translates as “and your girlfriend?”
