Red Dead Redemption 2 is chock full of weird mysteries to solve and while many of the game’s biggest secrets have been uncovered for years, its oldest one was only recently figured out.

In late 2025, RDR2 players stumbled across something new for the first time since the game released back in 2018, sparking a new wave of theories and investigations.

Players discovered a series of spider webs that pointed them towards a telephone pole with a hidden message that could be revealed when shot. This message then directed players to another pole with another secret message with a guitar, then two birds on the top of a building, and more mysterious symbols.

The whole mystery is so wild that a former Rockstar dev chimed in, remarking how it was “wild” how players found it. “I remember hearing about this and thinking it would never be discovered,” they said.

Well, it turns out the spider webs weren’t the first part of the mystery and instead, players stumbled across these clues in the wrong order. The origin of the Spider Dream Mystery is actually something players have wondered about for years: the pentagram in Butcher Creek.

The truth behind Red Dead Redemption’s mysterious pentagram revealed

In a YouTube video by RDR2 creator Strange Man, he reveled that he discovered how the glowing red pentagram underneath a house in Butcher Creek connects to the Spider Dream Mystery.

Strange Man noted that the pentagram, which only shows up between 4AM and 5AM, is made of the same mesh cables as the spider webs.

The pentagram actually guides players to five outhouses, each with a tally mark inside of them.

The fourth outhouse features additional markings, including the letters “LJ” and “SM,” alongside an icon representing Fort Brennand. At Fort Brennand itself, the outhouse shows six tally marks, while a nearby tower displays seven more etched into its entrance. Inside that tower, three extra symbols appear, pointing to a telephone pole, an industrial building, and what could be a pool of oil.

From there, the symbols at Fort Brennand direct the player to the pole with the spider carving and the rest of the mystery.

So far, the trail has run a bit cold with players still trying to figure out where to go, but the discovery has even pointed some back to Grand Theft Auto 5, believing it’s part of the legendary Mt. Chiliad mystery.

Another idea has to do with exotic plants called Birds of Paradise, but it’s too early to say if it’s connected.

As the community rushes to finally figure out what this all means before GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026, it’s unclear if this will have a proper end or if whatever payoff there was supposed to be is cut content.

A reward like a weapon or cosmetic would surely have already been found in the game’s files, but that isn’t stopping Red Dead detectives from scouring every corner of the map for clues and piecing together this puzzle.

At the very least, we now know that the pentagram in Butcher Greek wasn’t just a spooky Easter egg and was connected to something much bigger.
