The Resident Evil series is getting another movie, but this time it might not be as connected to the games as fans think, according to the director.

Movies based on video game franchises have historically been a tricky style to get right. We won’t talk about whatever that Assassin’s Creed movie created or the Minecraft movie, but the likes of the Super Mario Bros. movie and Sonic the Hedgehog have all garnered a pretty impressive following since their release.

Resident Evil’s films, of which there are currently seven, have been pretty hit or miss. Some (Resident Evil: Apocalypse) weren’t so great, while others (Resident Evil: Damnation) are favorites among fans. Those same fans are all casting their eyes on the next iteration, releasing in 2026. However, it might not be as true to the games as you’re expecting, according to the director.

Resident Evil movie won’t be “obedient to the lore”

In an interview with GamesRadar+, director Zach Cregger spoke out about the movie’s connection to the games, explaining that he’s “definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore.”

He continued: “I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online,” acknowledging the controversial nature of the upcoming film.

“So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that’s compelling. I know that I’m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too,” said Cregger, insisting that while it won’t be fully obedient to the lore, it’ll still be “a really good movie” that others will hopefully love.

Fans quickly took to social media to share their hesitancy, with some claiming this will be a repeat of previous iterations: “Here we go again. Why is it so hard to make a Resident Evil movie accurate to the lore… Tell me a story about other raccoon city survivors or the Ganados. Just give me something that I can watch, and it makes sense lore-wise.”

Others echoed the sentiment, highlighting that while the director has played Resident Evil, it’s not enough to not be obedient to the lore: “‘I’m trying to tell a story…’ Yeah, you’re supposed to tell the story of Resident Evil.”

Despite this, many fans are remaining hopeful, urging others to wait and see more footage before they judge. “I don’t know why people are upset with this,” commented one user, going on to explain that “it would’ve been nice to see him adapt one of the stories of the games, but I also don’t mind having a new story with new characters, along with familiar faces. Let Zack cook for now.”
