A man suspected of committing multiple robberies in Colorado was caught by TV news crews while they were actually filming segments about him.
Some criminals who think they’ve gotten away with a crime will, at times, show off. They want to mock police and federal agents who had been on their tail for a while. Others, though, try to play it more low-key – hiding away so they don’t arouse suspicion.
Well, on Friday, September 26, a man suspected of multiple robberies in Idaho Springs, Colorado, managed to raise the bar up a notch.
The man in question, Richard Applequist, walked behind TV news crews as they had been filming segments about his supposed robberies. One of the anchors, CBS’ Justin Adams, did a double-take after seeing Applequist walk across the street behind him.
Robbery suspect caught by TV crews
Applequist, who had his hood up, didn’t seem to be too bothered by the fact that the television cameras were pointed in his direction.
However, the CBS crew and another quickly called 911 to alert police to Applequist’s presence in the area. Within 10 minutes, he had been arrested by authorities and taken into custody for questioning.
“Deputies and Idaho Springs Police quickly responded to the area and were able to locate and arrest Applequist,” the police said.
An “extensive search” had been launched to find the suspect after several robberies had occurred between September 23 and September 25.
A spokesperson for the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office told CBS News that it was an “amazing” moment because suspects are typically never around when the media are.
Adams was shocked by spotting Applequist too. “I was kind of more in a sense of disbelief that wait a minute, this is the guy who I’m literally just talking about and described on live TV,” he said.
