Avengers: Doomsday star Simu Liu has described visiting Robert Downey Jr’s trailer on the movie’s set, and one very specific detail has had everyone laughing.
We’re less than a year away from witnessing Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movie, and the Marvel hype machine is already building anticipation.
In the last few days, Disney has released teasers featuring the return of both Captain America and Thor.
This week, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu has been discussing his time on the movie’s set, during which he had a wild encounter with Robert Downey Jr…
Shang-Chi star describes lunch in ‘Downey Land’ on Avengers: Doomsday set
“Downey famously has this convoy of trailers and this whole area in base camp that we affectionately called Downey Land,” Liu told Collider. “And I remember getting invited to Downey Land for the first time and just showing up in this tent, and it’s all this beautiful Andy Warhol-esque artwork, except all the characters are Downey. I mean, he’s so self-aware.”
The Shang-Chi actor continued, “He greeted me, and then I didn’t realize that Downey Land has its own chefs, but I had brought my set lunch, and he was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here.’ The chefs had come and laid out this full buffet, and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll put this away.’
“And then just the people walking through, I was like, ‘I cannot believe I’m having lunch with these people.’”
Use of the words “self-aware” has sent the internet into meltdown, with many questioning if that’s the right phrase to describe someone with art featuring their face.
“What an interesting use of ‘self-aware’,” wrote one commentator, while another said, “This sounds like the opposite of self-aware to me.”
A third concurred, stating that Downey’s actions make it a “weird definition of self-aware.” But the responses aren’t all negative, with many believing the Marvel hero-turned-villain is going method.
“Feels like a very Doom thing to do,” wrote one fan. “This is Doom. He’s in character always,” claimed another. A third agreed, “He used to be Tony Stark 24/7, this feels a bit more Doom. I’m here for it.”
There’s also belief that Downey Jr’s trailer helps everyone get into character: “Imagine showing up to set and discovering the lead actor has his own curated universe with its own chefs. RDJ doesn’t just act; he world-builds on set. Absolute legend.”
We’ll find out if Downey Land has had the desired effect when Avengers: Doomsday hits screens on December 18, 2026.
