Following Robert Duvall’s death, you can watch his final movie by streaming it on Netflix right now.

Acting legend Robert Duvall died on Sunday, February 15, at the age of 95.

Duvall made his film debut playing Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird in 1962, which was followed by memorable turns in The Godfather, The Conversation, The Natural, The Apostle, The Judge, and Tender Mercies, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Duvall’s last major theatrical release was Widows in 2018, while in 2023, his last film role dropped on Netflix, and is available to watch now.

Robert Duvall’s final role was in period whodunnit The Pale Blue Eye, which – following a brief and limited theatrical run in December of 2022 – released on Netflix on January 6, 2023.

Set in 1830, the movie serves as an origin story for horror writer Edgar Allan Poe, focusing on his time as a cadet at West Point Military Academy, and his participation in the solving of multiple murders.

Harry Melling is Poe, Christian Bale plays alcoholic retired detective Augustus Landor, who becomes his mentor, and Robert Duvall is Jean-Pepe, an expert in the occult.

The two investigators visit Jean-Pepe midway through proceedings, for advice on ancient symbols and traditions, as well as ritualistic practices that appear to be tied to the murders in question. Making Duvall’s final performance a small role, but one that’s crucial to solving the central case.

Dexerto covered the movie at the time, and here’s what we wrote in our Pale Blue Eye review: “Christian Bale is good in The Pale Blue Eye, as are supporting players like Gillian Anderson, Timothy Spall, Lucy Boynton, and Robert Duvall, but Harry Melling steals the show as Poe.

“Through his acting – and Scott Cooper’s writing – you truly get a sense of who the author is, and who he might become. So while the whodunnit aspect of the movie is entertaining, it’s the origin story you’ll remember.”
