Roblox is giving creators the keys to some of the biggest franchises in entertainment, thanks to a new system that lets users legally build with IPs like Squid Game, Saw, and Like a Dragon.
The new License Manager and Licenses catalog allow creators to develop experiences based on officially approved brands. That means no more workarounds or takedowns, just full creative freedom backed by real licenses. It’s the first time Roblox has offered a structured way to build with major entertainment IP, with approval from the rights holders.
At launch, Roblox has partnered with Netflix, Sega, Lionsgate, and Kodansha. Seven franchises are now available for licensed use: Squid Game, Stranger Things, Twilight, Saw, Divergent, Now You See Me, and Like a Dragon. Two more are coming soon, with additional IPs set to drop later this year.
A new era for Roblox creators
This update marks a major shift for Roblox and its creator economy. Fan-made games have always thrived on the platform, but building around copyrighted content was risky. Now, with official licensing in place, creators can safely develop games based on their favorite shows and movies, and even monetize them.
Sega’s Like a Dragon is already one of the most high-profile additions. Roblox says the community can now build original experiences based on the series’ world and story, all under official licenses: “Now the Like a Dragon IP is on Roblox for fans to develop worlds based on its rich setting and story, built under official licenses from RGG Studio. Whether they are already a devoted Yakuza fan or have never played before, we hope users around the globe will dive in and enjoy this vibrant new take on the series.”
Netflix is also extending its reach, starting with Stranger Things and Squid Game. These series are now open for remixing through the new license system, with more likely to follow as the program grows.
With this launch, Roblox is pushing for a future where fans and brands collaborate directly. Instead of bootlegs, creators can now build real games with real IP and get rewarded for it.
