Roblox is going viral for suddenly resetting seemingly all usernames that included the numbers ’69,’ creating one of the largest reset waves in the platform’s history.
Roblox players were left stunned and frustrated after receiving emails notifying them their usernames had been banned, without any prior warning or notice to change them beforehand.
Complaints about these resets first surfaced online around November 8-9, with users taking to Reddit and other forums asking for help.
Screenshots of emails sent to these players from Roblox say their “behavior broke the rules,” along with a moderator note that explained, “Your username or display name was found to be inappropriate and has been changed to a placeholder.”
The note clarified that players could reset their name free of charge in this case, but would have to pay to change it again.
Many users noted that they’d had their usernames for quite some time, finding it odd how the platform suddenly banned their tags.
It wasn’t long before the community realized that all of the banned usernames had one thing in common: the number ’69.’
Roblox enacts sweeping ban wave for usernames with ’69’ in them
Despite whether or not the affected players meant to reference the adult joke, it seems Roblox has decided to make a sweeping change just in case, effectively sending the message that any mention of ’69’ won’t be tolerated.
Luckily, players who had the numbers in their name weren’t totally banned. Instead, only their usernames were impacted, which have been replaced with a temporary placeholder until they pick another one.
The ban wave has sparked a viral conversation across social media, with some users theorizing that upwards of millions of accounts may have been affected.
Others expressed frustration that Roblox would make such a massive change to so many usernames without warning but fail to act against predatory behavior on its platform, referencing the ongoing conflict between Roblox and YouTuber Schlep.
Schlep has been at odds with Roblox after the site banned his account earlier this year and even sent a cease and desist order for making videos showing himself confronting predators using the platform to access minors.
