RuneScape developer Jagex has stated it will not use generative artificial intelligence to make any in-game content for either version of its long-running MMO.
The UK studio, which created and develops both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, said it has a clear internal policy keeping generative AI out of player-facing content while acknowledging the technology might still be used behind the scenes to improve internal tools and workflow efficiency.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Jagex senior vice president of product James Dobrowski explained how the company draws the line on AI use and what players can expect from the studio’s development approach.

According to the reporting, Jagex will not employ generative AI to “drive creativity” in its games or to generate any assets that players directly interact with, including visuals, audio, and other in-game content.
While Dobrowski said AI tooling may be used to assist developers internally, he made clear this would not result in any AI-generated material showing up in the games themselves.
“Where we are open to the use of AI is in things like tooling efficiency,” Dobrowski said, adding, “how do we make the way we work more efficient in order to make our staff’s lives easier and allow us to produce better content.
While AI could be used for such purposes, Dobrowski concluded by specifying, “But we do not want to be using AI to drive creativity.”
The vice president said that the measures would extend to external partners Jagex as it carried out audits “to ensure that no AI is being used in inappropriate ways.”
In January, Jagex celebrated RuneScape’s 25th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, it revealed an extensive roadmap detailing extensive improvements coming to the game.
