Avengers: Doomsday will see different universes colliding together with the threat of Doctor Doom overhead, but the movie wasn’t going to work without one key Marvel hero, according to the Russo brothers.

Marvel Studios has kept the plot of the ambitious movie under wraps, but we do know that the Avengers will cross paths with the universe that is home to the X-Men, played by the cast of the beloved Fox films, including James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Ian McKellen as Magneto.

The crossover will presumably set up an even bigger crossover in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set for release in December 2027. In the comics, Secret Wars explores what happens when incursions cause widespread destruction across the multiverse, and Doctor Doom weaves the remaining chunks together to create a misshapen reality that he rules, called Battleworld.

But all that is irrelevant if the Avengers: Doomsday plot fails to stick the landing. According to the Russos, the film wouldn’t work without one Marvel hero in particular.

The Russo Brother say Avengers: Doomsday won’t work without a founding Avenger

When speaking to Empire, the Russo Brothers revealed that Avengers: Doomsday won’t work without Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans). Fans will remember that in Avengers: Endgame, Steve traveled back in time to return all the Infinity Stones, before making a life for himself with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

But the first Doomsday teaser showed him at home, looking at his old uniform, as well as holding his child. Anthony Russo told the outlet: “We have a special affinity with the character. We can’t see this narrative without his central role in it, basically. The special place he holds among the ensemble, he sort of requires that moving forward.”

The duo also teased the tone of the sequel, suggesting that they’re trying to give it a complex storyline… Which shouldn’t be difficult since this will involve alternate universes, timelines, and the introduction of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. (Yes, we know, they probably mean the depth of the story.)

“As much as we run at the fun of what these films can be, we also run at the complexity and the difficulty of what these movies can do at a narrative level. I think we’ve found a new level of that in Doomsday,” he explained, before Joe Russo added: “Victor von Doom demands a certain tone.”
