New reports have indicated that two StarCraft shooters could be in the works, with one being developed by Nexon, the owner of Arc Raiders.

It’s been 16 years since StarCraft II launched, and a decade since its final expansion wrapped up the story. Despite that gap, the franchise remains one of the most iconic names in real-time strategy.

Blizzard tried to expand the series outside its RTS origins back in 2002 when the studio announced StarCraft Ghost, a third-person shooter with stealth mechanics, but shelved the project in 2006.

Now, fresh reports suggest StarCraft may be heading back to shooters and not just once.

Nexon reportedly working on new StarCraft project

Earlier reports from January indicated that a third-person StarCraft shooter was in development and set to debut at BlizzCon 2026, but according to The Korea Economic Daily, Arc Raiders owner Nexon has its own StarCraft game in the works.

The report claims Nexon has already completed preliminary preparations, including forming a dedicated internal team and recruiting key staff.

One notable hire is lead planner Choi Jun-ho, known as the creator of the custom map ‘Shrine Breaker (Shinppu),’ which saw major success within the StarCraft community.

His experience with the IP could pay dividends given his history of creating hit modes in earlier installments.

Two StarCraft shooters could be coming

Back in January, reports surfaced that Blizzard was developing a third-person StarCraft shooter internally, with a potential reveal set for BlizzCon 2026.

However, journalist Jason Schreier, who revealed a new SC was coming in his 2024 book ‘Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment,’ suggested that the Nexon project is likely unrelated to the shooter mentioned in his reporting. If accurate, that could mean two StarCraft projects are currently in development.

“No idea if this is true, but if so, it is unrelated to the StarCraft shooter that’s in development at Blizzard by a Blizzard team,” he said.

That would mark the biggest push for the franchise in over a decade.

Blizzard has attempted to take StarCraft beyond RTS before. In 2002, the studio announced StarCraft: Ghost, a third-person stealth shooter that was never released.

Since then, the franchise has largely remained dormant outside of competitive scenes and remasters.

But under Microsoft’s ownership, there’s renewed interest in Blizzard’s legacy IP. Phil Spencer has repeatedly expressed interest in reviving classic franchises, with StarCraft frequently mentioned among them.

If Nexon and Blizzard are both building new entries, StarCraft could finally be preparing for a full-scale comeback.

After years of silence, the Koprulu sector might be active again.
