About 76,000 pounds of potatoes were scattered across Interstate 15 after a multi-vehicle crash outside of Mesquite, Nevada caused major traffic delays for drivers headed toward Las Vegas early Friday morning.
Nevada State Police said the collision involved two semi trucks and a passenger vehicle and occurred around 5:55 a.m. local time. One of the tractor-trailers, which was hauling a load of potatoes, was damaged in the crash and spilled roughly 76,000 pounds of produce across the roadway.
One person was transported to a hospital and treated for minor injuries, authorities confirmed.
38 tons of potatoes block road
Traffic impacts were significant in the hours following the crash. The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada reported that all southbound lanes were briefly blocked near Mile Marker 113, just before Riverside Road (State Route 170).
Crews were dispatched to clear the spilled cargo from the freeway while law enforcement managed traffic in the area. Motorists traveling toward Las Vegas experienced slowdowns as cleanup efforts continued through the morning.
Around three hours later, officials said the potatoes had been removed from the roadway and all lanes were reopened to traffic.
This isn’t the first time a semi-truck accident left the highway covered in food, either. Back in August 2025, a wreck led to thousands of hot dogs being ruined after a truck slammed into the median.
