Hollow Knight: Silksong finally has a confirmed release date, and the announcement has sent players back to the original game in record numbers.

Team Cherry revealed on August 21 that Silksong will launch on September 4. Just a day later, Steam Charts recorded a new peak concurrent player count for Hollow Knight, with 20,367 players logged on August 22, according to Steam Charts.

The spike comes as fans prepare for the long-awaited sequel, which has faced years of anticipation since its announcement in 2019. Silksong will launch across PC and consoles, with Hollow Knight’s return to the spotlight showing strong anticipation for the next chapter.

Silksong builds momentum ahead of launch

Hollow Knight was originally released in 2017 and has remained one of the most acclaimed indie games of the past decade. The upcoming sequel shifts focus to Hornet, a character first introduced in the original, and expands on the game’s signature combat and exploration.

Team Cherry posted a status update on the game back in 2019, but went quiet for years afterwards, leaving some fans of the series confused and many others frustrated.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the team revealed that the development took as long as it did because they were having fun adding things to the game, and revealed why they didn’t update fans for years.

“We felt like continued updates were just going to sour people on the whole thing,” Ari Gibson said. “Because all we could really say is, ‘We’re still working on it.’”

With Silksong now set for early September, the increased activity around Hollow Knight highlights the community’s excitement ahead of release.
