Legendary broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough has made television history, becoming the oldest person ever to win a Daytime Emmy Award.

At 99 years old, Attenborough took home the 2024 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Personality – Non-Daily for his work on Netflix’s Secret Lives of Orangutans. The honor surpasses Dick Van Dyke’s previous record, set just last year when the Mary Poppins star won at 98 for his guest role on Peacock’s Days of Our Lives.

Secret Lives of Orangutans also secured two additional Emmys, including Outstanding Directing Team for a Single-Camera Daytime Non-Fiction Program. The documentary follows a family of orangutans in Sumatra and is narrated by Attenborough, whose decades-long career has shaped modern nature storytelling.

Attenborough’s win placed him ahead of fellow nominees Brad Bestelink (Living with Leopards), Anthony Mackie (Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast), Andi Sweeney Blanco and team (The Fixers), and Martha Stewart (Martha Gardens).

The British naturalist began his career in 1954 with Zoo Quest and has since become one of the world’s most celebrated documentary narrators through iconic projects including Planet Earth, Blue Planet, The Green Planet, and Frozen Planet.

The 52nd annual Daytime Emmy Awards were held on October 17 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
