Smash Melee legend Hungrybox turned Supernova into an auction house to sell off his third-place medal, and fans started placing outrageous bids.

On August 10, the Smash community celebrated the latest installment of Supernova, formerly known as Super Smash Con, one of the year’s biggest tournaments.

In total, 2,422 players signed up to compete in Melee, with Ludwig covering their entry fee. The prize pool was extravagant too, reaching $24,220 USD.

Unfortunately for Juan ‘Hungrybox’ Debiedma, he was unable to capture the title and came third, but made a sizable bit of extra money after deciding to auction off his medal.

Hungrybox auctions off third-place medal for $800

After the Melee tournament, Hungrybox decided he would sign the medal and give it to the highest bidder.

The bids started at $1 and rose from there, quickly reaching triple digits. It wasn’t long until a bidding war kicked off with fans going back and forth until the bidding reached a whopping $800.

When the bidding was all said and done, the winner joined Hbox on the couch and revealed that he currently “cuts grass” for a living.

“I make about $17.75 an hour?” the auction winner explained, but still expressed an intent to make good on his bid.

According to Hungrybox, this was the first time he had ever auctioned off a medal and this could become a new tradition for him at future Smash tournaments.

Amazingly, the $800 would be more than 5th-6th place made at the event, as Aklo and Moky took home $726.60.
