It’s not every day you see a global superstar at a Championship football match, and Swansea City fans turned out in their droves to witness Snoop Dogg’s first visit to the Liberty Stadium.
With the second-tier club benefitting from new American owners and the backing of football icon Luka Modric already, the decision was made to bring Snoop on board last July in an effort to raise Swansea’s profile.
Owners Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen didn’t ask the rap legend to pump money into the club, though. They simply wanted his fame and followers to put the spotlight on the Welsh outfit, and it’s clearly worked.
Bumper crowd turns out to see Snoop Dogg at Swansea City game
Snoop Dogg made the trip to South West Wales on a cold Tuesday night in February to watch the Swans take on Preston North End. Ordinarily, it would not be the kind of fixture to get bums in seats, but this ended up being a sell-out crowd.
20,233 fans turned out at the Liberty Stadium, a Championship attendance record for Swansea, to see Snoop’s first visit since becoming a minority shareholder.
The rapper did not disappoint, either. Kitted out in all-white and even donning a Swansea shirt, Snoop emerged from the tunnel in a huge cloud of smoke and greeted young fans, had a kickabout on the pitch, and got the crowd going with a good, old-fashioned towel twirl (using custom Snoop merch handed out prior to kick-off).
He then took to the stands to watch most of the game, which included a Preston goal in the 26th minute. That looked to have spoiled the party for Snoop and Swansea, and the 54-year-old disappeared before th final whistle.
However, initial suggestions that he’d had enough of the match are far from true.
Snoop Dogg didn’t want the party to end
Turns out, Snoop just wanted to watch the rest of the game in a more comfortable and private environment. Surrounded by snacks, drinks, and having a little smoke, the newest Swansea fan was able to see Liam Cullen hit a last-gasp equaliser for the home side, and he clearly enjoyed it.
Clapping and smiling as he watched on TV, Snoop could be heard saying: “Last second score. Good job. Way to go buddy!”
This all comes after Snoop has already spent time visiting the club’s training ground and even performing a private gig in Llansamlet, a small district of Swansea.
Explaining his interest in Swansea City during an interview with Wales Online back in January, Snoop Dogg said: “I knew I always wanted to invest in a soccer team – it’s been a dream of mine for years, it was all about waiting for the right opportunity.
“For real I want to meet with the fans. They are one of the big reasons I invested in the team… These fans are passionate, they are real, and I want to hear what they got to say when I am in Swansea.”
By the sounds of it, Snoop was not left disappointed. Surely, then, it’s only a matter of time before he jets over to Wales again.
