Paramount is hard at work on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and a rumor about its title could mean two classic characters from the games will steal the spotlight from the blue speedster.
The franchise has already come a long way since that infamous first trailer was met with heavy backlash in 2019, prompting Paramount to completely redesign the hero to look more like his video game counterpart. Thankfully, that decision was the right move, and the franchise has raked in over $1 billion.
The movies have introduced a handful of key characters from the games, including Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) in the second film and Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Director Jeff Fowler is working on a fourth movie that is aiming for a March 2027 release date. But the studio is rumored to change the title for what would be Sonic 4 to match the games, and it would mean bringing two classic characters back for more.
Paramount might change the title from Sonic 4 to Sonic CD
According to notable scooper Daniel Richtman, Paramount is debating calling the fourth film Sonic CD, which is the name of 1993 game that introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic to the franchise. The pair showed up in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 post-credits scene, so it would make sense narratively.
In the scene, an army of Metal Sonics attack the plucky speedster in a forest and Amy Rose saves him from being defeated. Fowler also briefly talked about Sonic CD when promoting the Sonic 3 home release.
“We’re all dying to get a female character in the mix with Amy, but at the same time, to honor how they were both introduced in Sonic CD,” he told Polygon. “So it felt very cool to honor that chronology and have them simultaneously introduced.”
Sonic 4/Sonic CD would take the chaos (emeralds) to a whole new level if it used the story from the game, which sees Dr. Robotnik trying to convert a moon into a giant base using time stones. Part of the game includes time travelling to a darker timeline where Robotnik wins, and fans are excited to potentially see that come to life.
On X, fans were excited by the idea, with many debating whether it would also introduce Silver the Hedgehog, a time traveling hero from 200 years in the future. One fan wrote they’re “very curious as to where this will go,” another added, “I’m all here for it,” and a third wrote “OMG METAL SONIC YES.”
